JOURNEYMEN TRAINING / SKILLED WORKFORCE PROGRAM GETS UNDERWAY
The California Apprenticeship Trust, under the guidance of Management Co- Chair Dave McEuen and Labor Co-Chair Don Zampa, recently established a certificate program for Journeymen. The certificate program, approved by the state of California, will enable Ironworkers that were organized into the Union as Journeymen, to receive the formal training that will enable them and their contractors to be more successful bidding Public Works jobs. AB 308 requires contractors that bid on public works projects to have 60% of the workers on the project, to have completed an approved apprenticeship program. Our hybrid training for Journeymen, includes the use of the Ironworkers National Training Fund’s LMS program that enables access to Manuals and Workbooks on line. Classroom lecture is done through Ring Central platform with a live Ironworker Instructor. The hands on and testing is scheduled when a group has completed the workbooks and the classroom sessions. Journeymen from California, Nevada and Arizona enroll in the evening and weekend sessions before the hands on and testing session is scheduled on a weekend.
Instructors Jack Digby from local 377 and Ernie Penuelas from local 433 spearheaded this project for the California and Vicinity Training Program. Organizing Ironworkers into the Union is essential to our growth. Organizing Contractors is vital for our solvency. Our state approved apprenticeship standards allow for Direct Entry for those who have been working as a non-Union Ironworker.
